Behind the facades of Place Vendôme, drawn by par Jules-Hardouin Mansart, after a building start in 1700, the construction of the Hôtel d’Evreux, listed historical monument, was finished in 1707 by the architect Pierre Bullet for its owner Antoine Crozat (1st fortune of France at the end of Louis XIV’s monarchy). It was built for his daughter and her husband, his lordship the Earl of Evreux, who gave his name to the building prior leaving it 10 years later for his new creation, the Elysée Palace. Considered to be a Masterpiece of Classical Architecture, from 1896 onwards the Hôtel d’Evreux is bought by and attached to the Headquarters of the Crédit Foncier de France. Ever since its inaugural trip in 1883, the Orient Express has sticked to its ambition to be an ambassador of the French ornamental art. The fully fresh renovation of the 7 wagons of the 20’s restored at their former look, with the modern comfort in addition, is a perfect proof. Sitting down in one of these prestigious wagons, surrounded by masterpieces of marquetry, glass panels, woodwork and interior ornaments, all kept at their identical former appearance, offers a parenthesis of a timeless journey.
